Trump’s New Plan To Sidestep Limits On Detaining Migrant Children

As I was home playing Airplane with Achilles and Jade, which consists of me whirling them up and down in the air like they're planes (thanks Argenis for teaching them this cool game!), I couldn't help but feel sadness for the children who continue to be separated from their parents due to Trump’s Family Separation Policy.

As of today, more than one month since the court-ordered deadline to reunite all the families, over 300 children continue to remain separated from their parents. More than 300 children who feel they have been abandoned, over 300 families who have been traumatized. And who knows how many of those children who won't ever be able to see their parents again.

Instead of focusing solely on returning these children to their parents, Trump's administration is now attempting to overturn the Flores Settlement Agreement which for 21 years has governed the rights of immigrant minors in detention and would allow families to be held indefinitely for as long as their cases went through the immigration process.

These proposed regulations would make it even more difficult for children to be released since aunts, uncles, and other extended family members would not be considered. Only parents and legal guardians would be able to have children released to them, which is obviously a lose-lose situation since the parents are also being held. And this of course leads to us feeling helpless in regard to what can be done for these minors.

The proposals will be open to the public opinion for the next 60 days before they can be finalized. If you want to help, which I truly hope you do, you NEED to please comment and register your concern on the Federal Register’s website.

Family separation is traumatic for every single person involved but as I see the way Achilles and Jade come tu us for comfort, my heart breaks for these children.

I know, as well as Trump’s Administration does, that this proposal to detain immigrant families indefinitely is a long shot. But as ridiculously impossible as it may be to even start believing that this proposal can possibly be accepted, we do live in a reality where Donald Trump is currently our President.

Don’t forget to let your voice be heard by commenting on the Regulations website. Once there, enter “Flores Settlement” and comment.
